The mega popular "Survivor" returns tonight, with a twist.
This season's show, "Survivor Cook Islands," will have the contestants separated into racial groups, and as you would expect, this has generated a great deal of controversy.
When I was in school the teachers taught us that it was good to learn about all the world's peoples and become enriched by this ethnic variety, now called diversity.
After three years of public schooling, my mother decided that I needed to have my head cracked a bit, so I'd retain more of what was being taught, so she enrolled me in Catholic School. There I was told that God had spread the Earth's resources around, such as minerals, arable land, and so forth so that every area had something of value.
That way, people would trade with each other and gain exposure to each other's culture, and learn new and different ways of doing things.
I just wanted to know what countries had the best candy and most desirable baseball cards.
Supposedly the premise for the latest "Survivor" series is to highlight cultural differences, and the way they bring about different approaches to resolving problems.
I'm sure it's all high minded, and not intended to split people among ethnic lines, as explained here.
There is even speculation that this set up may bring about greater harmony among the races.
Here's the link to the "Survivor" website.
My personal take is that in any competition people see their opponents merely as competitors, regardless of appearance, or ethnic background.
But, with this "team" approach, who knows. People may see this more as a battle of cultures rather than individual skills.
