The latest L.A. jailbirds, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan, have both been afforded star treatment by jailhouse officials.

In what is quickly becoming a joke to victims of DUI drivers, Richie served 82 minutes, probably in plush parlor chair, and Lohan plea bargained a day jail term.

The L.A. jail officials stated that due to extreme overcrowding sentences of 30 days or less are usually reduced to about a 12 hour stay. So I guess Lindsay got hit hard with a 24 hour sentence.

I don't know what sense there is in going through a trial, being sentenced and then getting off, basically. There's no incentive to avoid repeat offenses.

I take a dim view of drunk driving because too many innocent people are killed or seriously injured by people who insist on drinking and driving.
