Not surprisingly the first celebrity news of the New Year involves Britney Spears. This time, however, she may be the victim of a bum rap.
Spears hosted a party here in Las Vegas, at the "Pure" nightclub in "Caesar's Palace", and the first reports on her activities stated that she was drunk and had to be carried out.
However, Britney's spokespeople stated that she was simply exhausted, and fell asleep.
I'm told that she was paid around $250,000.00 for the stint, and a $5,000.00 bottle of Dom Perignon champagne.
Yikes, five thousand bucks for a bottle of grape juice!
In other Britney news her biggest online fan club is being shut down at the end of this month due to the administrator's displeasure with Spear's recent behavior.
And, new party pal, Paris Hilton, and Britney have been named the worst role models of 2006.
This business about role models always gets me. Are celebrities supposed to be role models? I think it depends on the type of celebrity we're talking about. If someone claims to be a moralist, or is engaged in activities that people commonly associate with high moral standards, such as the clergy or the medical profession, then I think we have the right to expect these people to act in a responsible fashion.
But if someone, such as Britney Spears, whose job is that of an entertainer, a songstress and dancer, I don't think she should be held responsible when her personal actions are less than savory. Yes young kids observe her, but she shouldn't be relied upon to act as a role model. On the other hand, we should expect a school teacher, e.g., whose job entails instructing and influencing youngsters, to be on his or her best behavior when in public view.
You can judge for yourself if Britney was wasted or not. Here's a You Tube video of her ringing in 2007.
